Hyperthyroidism
Carbimazole is the NICE recommended choice of anti-thyroid drug used in hyperthyroidism. Before starting Carbimazole a full blood count and liver function test should be done with continued follow-up and monitoring.
The MHRA have released important safety information regarding the use of carbimazole and the risk of acute pancreatitis. Also the associated risk of congenital malformations when carbimazole is administered in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Hypothyroidism
Propylthiouracil should be initiated as a second-line agent for those patients
who suffer sensitivity reactions to carbimazole.
Sensitivity is not necessarily displayed in both drugs.
